 Inspired by life...and LEED®
In 2006, our founder Susan embarked on a major healthy green life makeover due to the food and environmental allergies of her young son. She went looking for useful online tools to discover new actions and their impact, track progress, and compare/share experiences with friends. She didn’t find anything at the time, but she did find LEED®, a system that evaluates and recognizes designers and developers for incorporating green features into buildings.

Sustainable building means the integration of building materials and methods that promote environmental quality, economic vitality, and social benefit through the design, construction and operation of the built environment. Sustainable building merges sound, environmentally responsible practices into one discipline that looks at the environmental, economic and social effects of a building or built project as a whole.

GREEN TIPS SECTION:

Here is a link for daily green living and tips on how to go green a great reference to go to .

Here are some ideas for recycling and making a few dollars as well.

There are so many ways to recycle and reuse and you can earn money doing so from recycling your cans, paper, metals, clothing, electronics and more.  Gazelle.com is a site where they will give you a quote on the items you would like to recycle for cash you can earn anywhere from $100.00 or more for old laptops to  $50.00 for hand held devices.  They provide free shipping boxes and mailers. Once you send in your items they will send you a check or deposit the money to your account or pay pal.   They also have a recycling network, which you can go to and see if there are locations near you to accept items they can’t accept online.  Here is the link http://www.gazelle.com/recyclers

I compost as much of my kitchen waste as I can. If you don't have a garden you can use it on for it's nutrient rich soil fertilizer, I'm sure there is probably a neighbor or community garden you can contribute easily to. In my local area there are garden clubs that can use my compost.  There are some towns that have a compost pick up program. I would check your local county listings. This reduces the garbage you throw out significantly.

I do a lot of shipping and receive a lot of packages.  I flatten cardboard packaging, and some boxes as well as cereal and other household boxes.  I use them in my art studio for laying tiles I’m working on, wet canvases and I sometimes use them as paint palettes.  When I’m done with them all I recycle them with my junk mail.

I use old glasses, glass jars and aluminum containers in my art studio as well to store water, buttons, beads anything that I use to create my art that needs a home.  What I can’t use I take to my local recycle center and get a couple of dollars for it.  Which makes great gas money. Just make sure to rinse them all out.  The recycling facilities prefer them as clean as possible.
I buy a lot of magazine related to my industry to keep up with trends etc. but when I’m done with my magazines I give them to friends, donate to my doctors office or I take them to the recycle bin near my local high school high school.

I recycle my used linen to create new bedding for my dog.  I make sleeping blankets so she always has some stylish linen as well to sleep on.  My old towels I use for her and I also use them in my art studio to clean my brushes and counter tops.   You can also consider giving them to Pet Shelters they are always in of used towels, sheets and linens for the animals.

I don’t use harsh chemicals or paints.  But there is a correct way to Dispose of household chemicals & paints Your community will have instructions for proper disposal of these potentially dangerous household items, which shouldn’t go to the landfills.  You can also purchase and biodegradable additive to your paints so that they are soaked up correctly before disposing of your paints and chemicals.

What to recycle and where to take it? Your municipality should have a helpful list posted on their website. You can always call to find out. You can recycle a lot more than you think! I have a special tab for my area in GA with all this info.

We all are suffering from how electricity sucks us dry trying to keep our homes cooler in the summer. Between the air conditioning, fans, there is just no getting around it. Think of using darkening window treatments in the rooms that have a lot of heat gain in the summer.  They will keep your home cooler, and will help on electricity.  I close my blinds facing towards the ceiling.  This tends to keep heat levels lower and it also helps slow fading of your furniture upholstery and carpet.

In the winter or in cooler climates, place furnishings in front of south-facing windows that will absorb the sun's heat during the day and radiate it at night.
